Melissa, otherwise referred to as Lemon Balm, is a perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Melissa is a much-loved seasoning herb. It is known as a soothing lemony flavored remedy and as such it is used in the production of tea and ice cream. This colorful herb is also used to season fish recipes and garnish fruit salads. Melissa holds an important place in traditional medicine. Among its many attributed therapeutic properties: regulating menstruation, relaxing, lightening the mood, regulating hyperthyroidism, improving memory. Melissa is also known for its antioxidant properties. A number of current scientific studies have proven the efficacy of some of the medicinal properties attributed to Melissa. Medicinal Melissa is largely cultivated for its pleasant aroma and for its ascribed medicinal use. Melissa is cultivated both in large cultivation plants for drying and extracting the plant extract and in small gardens as a seasoning herb for the preparation of herbal tea, as well as decorative purposes.
