Sorrel is a perennial plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. Sorrel has a fresh bitter taste. It is used to add a sour touch to soups, salads and dressings. Its flavor is reminiscent of spinach.
In popular medicine, the plant was and is still used for various therapeutic purposes such as for the treatment of skin infections, digestion, constipation, hepatitis and more. Sorrel is also known as one of the chief ingredient in the production of the traditional herbal formula Essiac used in the treatment of cancer. A limited number of scientific study on Sorrel show that the plants holds antioxidant, anti-cancerous, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal properties.
